The weather stripping on my forward hatch is peeling away from the plastic. Should I use a standard marine sealant adhesive or is there something special? Also, I am always taking waves over the bow, is there a better stripping that I can upgrade to?

Thanks,
Greg

Nothing will hold that weather stripping to the vinyl that attaches it to the hatch. Order some from your dealer. It should be about 2.50 per ft and you need about 2.5 ft. I ordered enough for two so next time I will be ready.

Make sure all the plastic and weather stripping are clean and dry. Use liberal amounts of super glue, which dries quickly and holds well.

Marine goop has been suggested also, but i tried some and it is messy and takes too long to set up.

Loctite makes a large .18oz bottle of Super Glue available at Target.

I had the same problem on two AI's. After trying the Marine Goop, Super Glue, and a couple of other solutions, all of which fell off again, I replaced the gasket entirely. A friend of mine works in the Automotive Glass industry, and when he looked at the peeling original gasket he pulled out his auto glass supply catalog and pointed to a solution. The catalog is from a company called C. R. Laurence, and the gasket materials were part numbers CRL ST29A, Push-On Vertical Lip Trim Seal, and CRL ST36A, Black Bulb Trim Seal. One is for the part on the hatch cover, while the other is for the part on the hull. These are somewhat thicker than the original, but unlike the original Hobie gasket, where the gasket tubing is only glued to the mounting portion, the gasket on these are molded into the mounting channel. I only did the replacement at the end of August, so while it is still too early to know how they hold up over the long haul, I think it'll work out. Ordered from C. R. Laurence, they come in 25 ft rolls, and cost me around $2/ft. This looks to be enough to do about four boats. These items might be available from other sources, so maybe you can order them in smaller quantities.

I'll post some pictures of the installed gasket later this weekend. Have to get the camera and get out to where the boats are currently stored.

THANKS!!!

I'll pass that information on to our engineers and buyers! If it is tougher and applied the same way... maybe we can change here.

Finally got a chance to take a couple of pictures of the new gasket. I'm not much of a photographer, but here they are...

OK, how do I post pictures?

You have to first put the image on a web server someplace, then follow these instructions.

Looks a little bulky... But if it's bombproof, who cares!
