Hi All

Firstly, the forums great. Helped a lot with the new Tiger we've bought. Made the transition from a H16 much easier.

The issue I'm having is lee helm on starboard tack. It's fine on port tack with the tiller just wanting to head up into the wind. Starboard tack's another matter!! Constantly have to push the boat up into the wind and if I let go of the tiller it bears down fast enough to almost send us both around the front when on the wire.

I've toed in the rudders so they're pointing to the tip of the opposite hull, I guess that's around 6-8mm. Just can't work out why it's a problem on one tack and not the other.

Cheers
Gav

Check the rudder rake. Rudders should have the same angle fore / aft and not be able to move significantly when locked down.

Contact your dealer - this could just be a bad rudder - either drilled wrong or not symmetrical - (check it for yourself to see if there is a variation...also check it against another TIger in your area if possible)we have seen this on Tigers - its not too common but it has been an issue in the past.

Concur on the rake issue- I had the same problem. On adjustment screw had backed out so I had different rakes.

The HCE rudder stocks don't have an adjustment screw. At least mine don't.

Cheers. I've spoken to the Hobie guys over here and we're going to try to pack the rudders out on the weekend.

Strange that HCE don't have rudders set up to rake.

You just wrap the bottom of the casting in tape :D . I don't know if is the case with the Tiger, but I haven't changed the rake on mine at all. They're pretty good the way the boat came. Except for sometimes going downwind with the kite up and I occasionally get some really bad lee helm, like hard to hang onto/scary, lee helm.

If your using the old rudders you will see some rubber packing inside the bottom of the casting, we had removed these to kick the rudders further under the boat to increase tacking performance. Did not change this even with the new rudders.

If you have your rudders facing the opposite bow you have way to much toe in, 3-5 mm is all that is needed.

I say no toe in on the rudders. Make them as parallel as possible. This is not a 16, the daggerboards track the boat rather straight.

I posted somewhere that I initially had the same problems you are having and fixed with rake. One is slightly more under than the other.

Later,
Dan
