As the F18 NA Co-chair and PNW F18 Fleet Rep, I am posting the 2009 F18 dates, I will let the Div 4 Tigers post OD dates below for clarity between F18 events and the OD events.

Cheers - TEAM BLUR USA 2477

With the new year right around the corner I thought that it would be good to provide a preview of what is coming up in 2009 for the PNW Formula 18 fleet.

The PNW F18 fleet currently have 5 top-notch events on the calendar for 2009 and all the regattas should be very solid events based on 2008 attendance. If you are interested in only doing 1 or 2 F18 Class events, I would suggest the NOODs or WAVES which had the highest attendance and I felt had best post race events.

I will update this forum with the final schedule, but for right now here are the current dates...

Jericho Flights of Spring - Jericho Sailing Center BC - April 18,19
Seattle Sailing World NOOD - Seattle CYC/SYC - May 15,16,17
WAVES Olympic Can Am - Vancouver BC RVYC - June 27,28
Bellingham OD - Bellingham BYC - September 19,20
Seattle F18 Fleet Championships - Seattle CYC - October 3,4

In 2008 the PNW Fleet saw great competition between the Infusions/NACRA F18s and Tigers with Scott McDonald (BC) and Andrepont/Koch (Seattle) swapping race wins in the Spring and Summer and near the top of F18 North American rankings and Colwell/Colwell (Bellingham) winning the F18 Fleet Championships in Seattle as well as the Tiger NAs.

NOOD REGATTA - F18 PNW Regional Championships

March is here and Flights of Spring, the first F18 regatta of the season, is only one month away and followed by the NOOD Regatta in May! Racing for the F18s take place May 16-17th, 2009.

As of February we had 8 teams get back to me that they would like to race in the event and the consensus is that we would race only 2 days – Saturday and Sunday (along with all the dinghies). I think we will most likely have 12-15 boats on the line come race day...

As of March 1, the online registration is up for the Seattle NOOD with registration and all regatta information at:

www.sailingworld.com
Then click: NOOD Regattas
Then click: Seattle under the list of locations
Under the Seattle Info Center you will see Online Registration

Sailing World will be adding more information on the Info Center over the next few weeks. The Notice of Race is located on the Regatta Info Center; please read over to answer any questions you may have. If you have any other questions please email me!! I will also be working with Sailing World to secure the same storage location that we had last year.

Class formation deadline is May 4th; each class needs a minimum of six boats for a class to remain eligible to race. The late fee starts May 4th at 5pm EST. Please keep this is mind when sending registration by fax or mail.

The last day to receive a refund or cancel your entry is May 11th.

I will update everyone as soon as I know more.

Cheers,

Paul

Well not every regatta goes as planned.... The Seattle NOODS/F18 PNW Championships were this past weekend:

As Don Atchley wrote -

Well, not quite what we expected but a great event in regards to visibility and awareness for our class.

Saturday was a bust for wind. We all sat around and gossiped. Then we went down to the slips and mingled. It was like attending boat show. The visual of TEN fully rigged Tigers in formation at the top of the boat ramp and 2 more on the dinghy docks garnered many questions from pedestrians. I got to chat with Olympic coaches and such during the beautiful spring day on Puget Sound. Everybody was somebody is seemed.

Every couple of hours the RC would come out of door on the roof of the yacht club. If they saw their shadow, it meant 2 more hours of delay…

The racing was called off at 3:30pm and the preparation for the evening events began. The teams began the night with food and drinks under the party tent with a building breeze coming in around 5:00 finally.

While our group called it all in and headed for a social at Paul and Lean Andrepont’s house down the road. The breeze was too much for Bryan Colewell to pass on. He geared up and went out for a sail.

Sunday came way too early, mostly because we had way too much rum the night before. We rigged the boats same as the day before and waited. The RC announced an 11:30 start regardless.

We got towed out to the course and then proceeded to engage in 4 micro races. 1 tack to A-mark. Pop the spinnaker and then 1 jibe to the finish.

On the way in to the docks, the wind picked up enough to let us buzz the beach and actually fly a hull. John Hoage skippered the newest Tiger to victory. Grabbing the start and hitting the inside shore first every time.

The end result. Lots of sun, very little wind, and a great social event on the water with some of the best sailors in the Pacific Northwest.

Formula 18 PNW Championships - 12 Boats

1. John Hoage/Todd Christianson - Tiger
2. Paul Andrepont/Andy Koch - Tiger
3. Ben Colewell/Crew - Tiger

4 races - race wins split between John/Todd (2 wins) and Paul/Andy (2 wins)

Overall, the PNW Spring F18 season has been a very light air affair with no races this season sailed in over 15 knots of wind.

Next up - WAVES in Vancouver....
