I've repainted the hulls on my '82 Boomer and want to replace the striping. They've long since been removed so nothing to use as a reference. I've seen some posts saying other color schemes have 1/4" stripes but I'm not sure if this is the case for the Boomer stripes. Does anyone know how wide the stripes were for the Boomer? I'm guessing 1/4 each color and if I remember correctly, it was blue, purple, red and orange. Anyone know?

It's not worth the time to find the exact sizes or even shades of color stripes, just come as close as you can and stick it on.

For all the specific striping of that era, i.e. Boomer, Carumba, etc., the four, colored stripes are each 1/2" wide, bordered top and bottom by an 1/8" black stripe.

Not 100% certain on the Boomer colors, but I think you have them right.

This may help in matching the colors http://fleet297.org/PDFs/H16_Sail_Patterns.pdf

Post some pictures when she's finished! :)

Fantastic! Thanks for your help. So the total width of all four stripes is 1/2 or are you saying each colored stripe is 1/2 for a total of 2" - not including the black border - don't seem to remember the black border by the way, oh well. I do remember the total stripe to be pretty wide, something like 2", that sounds right.

I'll post some photos once its all complete - need the snow to melt first! I also have photos from when we bought it back in '84.

Went back and edited that post to say each stripe is 1/2"

And now that you mention it...didn't the Boomer stripes become wider at the rear as they turned down to the keel line, and end about a foot, or so, in front of the transom? Or was that just on the 14's? There may not have been the black stripe above and below

Also should edit to say that black stripe above and below may only include the Cat Fever, Carumba, Tequila Sunrise of that era?

Right, I'm don't remember the black border but it might have. You're also right that it turned down at the transom but I don't recall if widened or not. In any case I probably won't try to replicate that widening but I will turn it down. Anyway, thanks for your help.

WHOA, awesome! That is so helpful, thanks. I didn't remember the spacing between stripes but it I like it. I'll let everyone know how it turns out.

Hey Mat, were there 2 boats in that first pic? Looks like way too many hulls there

Yes there were. The top pic is from the 83 Hobie 14 Nationals. I just cropped it down to the hull stripe.

I also didn't "post process" the scan to remove the printing pattern - something I usually do when scanning from old magazines to put images in the Hotline. It works, but at some loss of clarity. Figured the guy wanted to see the hull stripes as clearly as possible.

The bottom pic is from an ad in the same issue of the Hotline - it comes from a Lake Powell photo shoot done for Hobie in the early 80's. A lot of those pictures got used over the years.

Hey Matt

The serial numbers on my hull say my 16 is a 1986 model, but those sail color diagrams don't show 1986's with yellow hulls and tramp like mine has. Also, I have 1984 Nationals sails on it, sail #89013. Did they do some 86's with yellow hulls?

Boats with colored hulls were available into the 90's.

I didn't show hull colors in the sail pattern diagrams because it was about the sails, not about the hull colors / stripes. As it was, it took about two months to research / draw those.

Only when I did the 20s sail colors did I re-create the hull graphics for them - but they're only about 3 or 4 different types.

I know this is an old post but I was curious if you ever re striped your boat? Mine are faded and I would like to take them off and put new ones on.

bump...again

I'm trying to find the 1/2" striping. I called and drove all over Indy today and haven't located anything yet. I see that 3M makes a vinyl striping tape that looks about right. My only question is if the colors will match.

Has anyone had an experience with this?
