You folks know that scew-in hatch uner the seat? This will be the second time I'll have to repalce mine. I really don't know if another OEM part is going to last in this place any better than the first two.

Does anybody have any ideas as to what to put in it's place?

I've never used the seat hatch and leave it sealed. Do you leave your kayak sitting out in the sun when storing it?

I never remove the screw-in hatch under the seat so I've never had any problems with it. Out of curiosity, in what way did it fail? Do you access that area often? If so you might want to consider installing a hatch forward of the seat. It's a lot more accessable, especially while on the water.

It is the threaded ring that has broken both times. The threads have broken and allow almost half of the assembly to slide down into the kayak, making for an uncomfortabe seat. The actual screw in part is fine. I never use this thing, and am still trying to figure out why it is there. I like the idea of the large hatch in front of the seat, and may have to go ahead and order one.

Good one Noal, but you need some ice for your bait--er, I mean beer. Likewise I have never used my underseat hatch either, and similarly have not had a problem with it. It really doesn't seem to serve any useful purpose, except perhaps as a marketing ploy.

However, the forward rectangular hatch that Jon at KFS invented turns out to be right handy based on all the reports that I have seen from users. Maybe somethiing for Hobie to think about, except that you do lose your nice, convenient tackle box locale. Guess you could lash the tackle box to the hatch lid (maybe)...

Noalias, is that photo of your forward hatch? Did you know there was a beer in your hatch? It is great that you go around picking up litter, because I know you wouldn't be drinking and driving at the same time. <Chuckle> How did you install it?

It is an access hole to open in order to find things, like beer cans, that have disappeared in the hull.

Apalach... The tackle box sits atop the hatch cover and is secured by the bungie just the same as before. Only now, it sits on top of the "cooler" lid. :D

OK, I've ordered yet another hatch, but I would like to know..... The hatch in front ot the seat..... Is there a way to make it into a compartment? I can just see placing something there only to chase it later.

Puck,
I'll assume that you are referring to the 6" hatch in the bow.
Yours didn't come with a bag? If not they make one to fit. I've also seen where someone used a plastic jar (like a peanut butter one) and a screw. Attaching the lid to the hatch cover with a short screw. Waterproof and cheap. Hope this helps. I’ll try and find the link for the jar idea (not mine) and post later.

I am refering to the photo above. The large rectangular hatch would make it easy to reach.

I actually bought the larger "Fat Cat" bag for the front hatch, and it always winds up full of stuff, camera, cell phone, first aid kit, snacks, etc.

Puck... The KFS hatch you see in the photo is the best addition I've made to my OB. It opens up a great deal of easily accessed storage space and also permits interior storage of long items like 6 1/5 foot rods, gaffs, etc. I've had no problem with things shifting around out of reach when placed inside. For small items that you want kept at ready access, a small dry bag works well. Conceivably, you could install a deck loop or some other means of attaching lanyards to the inside of the hatch frame or hatch cover. That would preclude the issue of items shifting out of reach.
