I have a downrigger to mount on my Outback, and before I go drilling holes in it, does anyone have some tips for mounting it?
(do's, don'ts, location etc.)
I was thinking about mounting it in the front, and I have a 2 lb. weight for it
I am not sure if a rear mount would be comfortable.
Lets just say with my age, I am not as flexible as I used to be...
Thanks in advance.
LD

On my Quest it needs to be out of my paddlestroke-range, and I prefer to be able to see my rods, so It`s the downrigger in the back and the rods up front

Pardon my flats fishing ignorance, but for what types of kayak fishing do you use/need a downrigger for? My understanding is that they are used mainly in trolling for deep(er) water stuff to get baits/lures to a particular water depth where fish are supposedly holding. In my area (Northern Gulf of Mexico), the continental shelf is so broad that even being out 25 miles or so from land, we are still in water depths of only about 50-60 feet. Of course, no one kayak fishes out that far from land, so only power boats around here ever use downriggers, and even then they are a pretty rare occurrence.

Hiya Apalach!

I use it to get my (floating) lures to a depth between 2-12 meters (6-40 ft), because the banks which contours I follow are rather curvy, deeprunners on longer lines don`t work to well, keep cutting corners and picking up veggies/ dirt and dig in musselbeds.
So the downrigger comes into action, the lure just a meter or so behind the ball, every turn is a foot down, and I can circle tiny isles, bridgebases etc.

Hey PF,
Gotcha--thanks for enlightening me. That's a nice-looking setup you have on your Quest. Quests are the biggest selling Hobies in my area according to our local dealer, something that I was not aware of until recently. Tight lines!

Thanks for the pics, that does help.
I was thinking about mounting my rigger up front, and on the other side put a rod holder pointed at the rigger.
Any thoughts or comments?
Thanks,
LD

You could use these,
http://www.kayakfishinggear.com/index.a ... &ProdID=37

up front on both sides (be sure to get the sealed version) in the storage trays, accepts all Scotty products.
(there are adaptor`s available to add a Ram ball to a Scotty base)

this gives a very flexible setup for rodholders and downrigger, they don`t compromise the cartopping.
and can be used with 2 rodholders when the downrigger is not in use/ or when selling the yak again

the gimbal mount from Scotty won`t work in the Hobie flushmount as they need a pin to lock to prevent rotating.

I use the Scotty lake troller

PF, Thanks! :D
I had seen those before and really did not give them any consideration.
I like your suggestion, and I am going to order a couple!

You can specify which flushmount you want if you buy the Powerlock rodholder.
woudn`t recommend the baitcasterrodholder, as it is a bit smaller and is designed around palmsized baitcasters and small rods.

Get the hardware as well, some Goop, and only use the plastic (composite) extenders from Scotty

Hello,

How did you access the hull or what type of fasteners did you use on the scotty mount?

Thx,
