in my experience the best type of shackle to use in most situations on a sailboat is a captive shackle, that is one which the pin will not fall out of even while open, this is a big help while in a hurry to rig, saving many trips back and fourth to the nearest source of shackles. they are also much faster to open and close and because they snap shut they are less likely to be shaken open by vibrations and whatnot and i have never seenone break when used properly.
