Looking in the the Hobie Catalog I see 2 part numbers for the Hobie 21 taper pin

Part # 31240001
part # 31241001 (Oversize)

Are these pins still available

My question is the later pin ( 31241001 ) a replacement pin for enlarged holes?

If this is the case how do I know if my pins have already been replaced? so I don't order something I already have. Does any one have width measurements.

Thanks, Ben

We have just (1) 31241001 Oversized pin in stock $56.00

Yes, the oversize is for worn holes.

Looks like the original pin measured .706" at the fat end / .581" on the narrow end.

The pins were changed to the larger size for the second year of production. Some people pulled the first pins through the crossbar which could have been contributed by overtightening the nut. But anyway, there are probably few of the original small ones lying around anywhere.

Hopefully you sourced this through a dealer... was purchased from our stock a few days ago. No longer available from Hobie USA.

Seeing as Gary probably bought the last Pin I guess the rest of us needing such an thing would have to get one made? Is there anyway to get drawing or some specs to hand to a machine shop? The pins are stainless? Anybody interested while I'm at it?

Probably the best thing is to take an existing pin to a machine shop. From there they can modify the dimensions a bit bigger to be used on a worn boat. Yes, stainless.

Maybe Hobie Matt could run down the machine shop that made the original taper pins and we could order them from them direct
The pins were probably done on a CAD lathe and the program should still be there or if a CAD drawing of the pin could be provided for the standard and oversize pins some 21 owner probably knows someone in a machine shop
there are some probably close to me this is NASCAR Shop Home

Went sailing this weekend great sail on a great boat nothing on the lake even close for speed and comfort

I saw a TV show about construction of carbon fiber masts and booms Wonder how much a carbon fiber mast would cost for the best sail boat ever made

The last (oversized) pins were made in France... years ago. I have nothing here and not enough volume to make it worth building again... that why we are where we are today... out of this item.

A little update. I was able to have oversize Stainless steel tapered pins made here at a local fabrication shop. He had my crossbar (another story) and my old pins and I just showed him how much the pins needed to stick out when he was done.

I think the cost ended up being about not much more than the oversized pins from Hobie (no longer available) but you need to make at least 4 to keep the unit cost down. I'll send some pictures later.

If everyone that needs oversized pins wants to put an order together I could have him make another batch.

Taper pin oversize I could use a few
Who what when where and how much?
Please post your contact info
there is no good purpose in re inventing the wheel if your contact has already made a few oversize taper pins

Maybe some other 21SE owners could buy a few and get the unit price down

The Hobie 21 SE still the best cat Hobie ever made

I'm guessing we are looking at about $250 for 4, the cost may go down if the group can put together a bigger order. I already have mine so I'll let you see what you can put together. Eventually a lot of the old 21s will need the oversized pins. My standard pins seemed to go from looking okay to nearly pulling through pretty fast once they got to certain point.

I have to take my Nacra trailer in to the guy for some modifications in mid to late April. I could drop a pin by for him to duplicate if there is interest.

I'll post a picture later so you can see what they look like. I think they look great. Mike's shop isn't high tech but he has been working metal for a bunch of years. In other words there no CAD computer running a fabrication machine. You can see his handy work on my crossbar repair post. If you get enough interest it might make sense to try a fab shop with the automated setup as I guess the cost would come down faster.

You can contact me by using my user name at hotmail or just send me a private message through the forum.

I agree the 21 is great!! I've had mine for 10 years and it will be a sad day when I no longer have her. She has been hit twice by winds over 100mph and she is still together (2 masts and a crossbar). Tornado alley is a (censored).

I hate it when this happens. I read Matt say the parts were made 'in France', and for some reason that triggered a memory flash....
