More Moreton Bay pics

These were taken yesterday morning in winds gusting 30 knots - I didn't have to guess a spectator on a trailer sailer measured the winds with instruments and told me when I got back to shore

You'll see from both that I hadn't actually made it out through the leads when these were taken. I'm going through some other material from open waters and if it's any good will post it.

Speeds were around 8 - 9 knots.

My youngest son suggested that 'just sailing' was a bit boring. I think he was suggesting some music but as I don;t know how to do that yet feel free to hum something.

I'm not buying that, 30 knots, (35.56 MPH), and not a single Whitecap to be seen?

The U.S. Government's National Weather Service defines a gale as 34 to 47 knots (63 - 87 km/h) Wiki.

You were sailing just 4 knots less than a GALE but there is no white water or even Spray?

(Cue intense debate about what is, and what is not a Gale.)

15 to 20 knots with higher gusts I can buy

Here in S Florida, the rule of thumb is that winds of 15 mph produce whitecaps.

Here in Hawaii at 10 mph starts small whitecaps, 15 mph can produce up to 5' wind waves in as little as 2 miles (I'm on the leeward side of Maui).

Hi all

We normally get white caps here at anything over 10 knots e.g. today was 10 - 15 knots and wall to wall white caps.

I've tried to get the size of seas to show on tape a couple of times but so far just can't get the right angle.

The seas the other day were actually higher than normal but less white caps. It also wasn't the short chop I'm used to. Wind and tide were together. maybe that makes a difference.

When the fellow told me it was gusting 30 knots I had just come in with the sail reefed past the tell tale window and the GPS reading 8 knots so I didn't argue.

Either way it was good fun.

And THAT is the important part.
