Has anyone in the States found an equivalent wave deflector mentioned by Shufoy

If not, do you think I could order a couple of them from Perth? What might be the
currency exchange rate + shipping?

A question for Shufoy...do you have a contact address (email address) for the Perth
company that made your wave deflector?

When i got mine they were $20 Aus, so cheap! Shipping at a guess $50-75? They also had a range of colours, and would probably make them in any colour you wanted.

I did notice today using the yak in Adventure form without sail/outriggers and left the WD on, it creates a bit more splash at the slower pedaling speeds, and i'd probably remove it for nextime.

Brett (Shufoy) - can you point us to the precise page - there's a lot of gear on that website

Sorry for the slow response guys, the Wave Deflectors aren't on that site but that is the company. If you email them, they will organise it for you. They are all good people!

Please note tho guys that the standard WD does require some remodelling to fit the Adventure, best achieved by 5" Grinder and cutting disk and also the marking and drilling of the mounting holes... So make sure you realise this before purchasing and then asking why it doesnt fit!!

Shufoy,

Excellent idea. Video does a very nice job illustrating it, especially when the bow tries to dive under a wave but re-emerges very quickly, like a second or so. The deflector clearly worked.

What do you think of putting deflectors on each of the amas to effectively end the diving under waves problem?

I discussed the problem in my recent picture-story of our 6-day AI-camping trip here in S FL.

Scroll down until you see “Flamingo to Chokoloskee, Jan 13-18, 2010”

As I gave more thought to it, the idea of a wave deflector came to me also. I was going to fashion a pretty ugly deflector to try it out. Ironically, I was outside taking pictures of my boats to illustrate some points. When I walked in, looked on the computer and there was your post. I was in semi-shock to see you could buy something off the shelf--great find. Not sure where we can find it in the states, but there must be something similar.

Thanks for your post.

Keith

Thanks Keith, i'm glad you liked it mate!

I would avoid putting them on the ama's for the resaons mentioned regarding strength particuarly. Its great for the bow, and easily removed and refitted. Just for those days, with excess chop and lots of following sea running.

found this one:

not sure it would work on a TI or an AI but it's a start.

Be aware, it will help raise the bow in waves, BUT it will also add a lot of wind resistance, causing the boat to not be able to come across the wind at a lower wind speed, and not point as high in stronger winds.

Not sure what all the fuss about downwind diving into waves ahead is all about. I love it and encourage the Galleon to do it whenever it can. I am amazed just how well it handles it by quickly re-surfacing with not a great deal of speed loss, and a dodger keeps too much water from getting back to you. My first few times out I was certain I would break a mast but the boat is strong enough to handle it all.....Pirate
