Hope you have heard by now but we have weighed up weather conditions etc and have decided to delay until Thursday Friday. Not much in it I suppose but Monday Hot, Tuesday late storm with eratic winds both days verses Thurs / Fri mild days with gentle easterlys. So looking forward to this trip. It's hard to postpone but lets hope that the forcast doesn't change.

Well it means we can spend all Friday morning on the island. The storm front is forecast to come through late morning on Tuesday, so we would have had to depart early morning or risk being caught out to sea in a thunderstorm, with a 30 knot headwind and a 3 metre swell. That could definitely ruin your day.

It was a tough call to postpone but already the THU/FRI forecast is improving with clearing skies and a dropping swell. As Chris says, it will give us more time to explore the island. :)

While we are waiting to go, I thought that I would do some reading on swells. ( really I just wanted an excuse to use the lightbulb symbol )

 Did you know that if there is an average swell for the 2 days of 2m , then statistically.....

1 in 10 will be larger than 2.14m
1 in 100 will be larger than 3m
1 in 1000 will be larger than 3.72m.

So if we are on the water for a total of say 8 hours, the swell will rise to 3.72m approximately 29 times.

And I'm guessing that is one of the reasons why so many rock fishermen come unstuck.

We probably don't want to be in the cave when that 1000th wave comes through otherwise our sequence of emotions will be

8) :o

With the low swell I'd still like to try for Mon/Tue. Can we decide Sunday night after checking the latest forecast? If the storm arrives late Tuesday we should be able to get back before it hits. An earlier start Monday might be the go?
PS -Slaughter turn your phone on!!

I'll go with the flow - just let me know 8)
From what I can see the winds are building throughout Tue afternoon to very strong by 5pm.
Can someone give me specific details as to the launch site and ETD??
From what I can ascertain it is something like a two hour drive from here (Tuggerah) and probably another hour to load and launch.

Hi Mickey. I think the agreed launch site is Shoal Bay. Looking on Google it's the boat ramp 400m to the East of the only jetty on Shoal Bay. My yellow AI has a Mazda Tribute parked underneath it. All we have to do now is agree on Mon / Tues or Thur/ Fri. Tuesday seems to be the only issue. We will need to pack extra long tent pegs for Monday night if we go.
Stringy is ringing tonight to spread the word.

OK - I can see the boat ramp on Google Earth - car parking on the opposite side of the road to the ramp.
I'm aiming to be there between 8 - 8.30 am.
Everything looks good - see you there tomorrow :D

After a couple of failed attempts we finally made it and BI had five AI's sitting on the shore in Esmerelda Cove! 8)

Thanks to Chrisj, Slaughter, Mickey and Geoff for making it such a fantastic trip!

Probably worth its own thread instead of being tacked onto the end of 7 pages of planning drivel!
More details to come.

Pretty upset. I had to go out for an AI fix yesterday just to escape the flood of great pics and risk a tsunami, getting landed on by a seaplane and becoming a good earth to lightning... But i did get 2 great sausage rolls for brekkie at the WSC.

Don't take it too hard CGM and Det,
I'm sure we will heading there again and it would be great if we could have at least 7 AI's in the fleet!
I'm determined to explore those seacaves and would like to camp on the island for longer next time.
A week would be great! :)
