I've taken your advice and fitted 1" side-release buckles, like the Hobie ones Pirate. They seem to hold up OK, but I am amazed they support my weight. The tie-down straps I used initially feel really solid, but the buckles are aluminium (I think), so plastic would be better for salt water. I might also add an extra strap in the centre, as you suggest, just to be on the safe side. I am planning to take my (fearful) wife out for her maiden sail on one of these and I don't think it will be a good start if she gets dumped in the middle of the bay
