My Getaway was assembled for me prior to delivery in July 05. The dealer did not epoxy the comp tip in place. I found this out when I brought the boat home and was prepping it for winter. I noticed some flaking along the edge of the joint and upon further investigation the Comp tip slid out of the Mast. I believe the degradation is cosmetic and the dealer is sending the epoxy kit. My question is What have the issues been with the Comp Tip that has prompted Hobie to recommend epoxy on all comp tips. Is there the possibility that my tip has internal structural damage due to stress. It was enough to cause the flaking.
I have pictures.

Problems?

The Getaway and Wave masts are the only ones with the shroud wire tang in the CompTip area. Compression of the sailing rig is much greater on the Getaway, so we glue them in place to prevent the cosmetic issues you have experienced.

I do not believe that the tip will be damaged internally, but suggest glueing for sure.

Matt,
I noticed some flaking around the connection on mine as well. Should I check and see if it was epoxied or is it normal for it to flake some. I saw the flake fall offf when I was on a downwind course one day and thought it may have been because I rigged it super tight that day.

I know that my comptip was not glued in. What epoxy should I use for this?

I emailed the dealer and they sent me the epoxy kit. It was the same kit as described in the instruction manual. I am waiting for spring and warmer weather to do the assembly.

Thanks. I am planning a trip to a dealer in Northern Va. here in a couple weeks. I am sure he will have it.

Thanks again.

I requested that my dealer not epoxy the tip so I could remove it to fit in my garage.

I've also noticed the flaking. Hope it's just cosmetic.

Phil
