Just getting my wave at the end of the season last year,I only got to sail it the one time.My gps recorded a max. speed of 13.5 mph.in winds of 15-20 est.At that speed I noticed the lee bow getting close to submerging and it worried me.I've read in other posts that a 10 hole adjuster moves the power further aft which keeps the bow up higher.Whats the concensus on this?I weigh 175 lbs.and I was as far aft and out as far as I could go to hold it flat. thanks doug

I was out in a really really windy day last fall, only boats out were: me, 3 kite guys and a crazyass on a laser. I was keeping pace with the kites and killed the laser so technically speaking, I would say I was going pretty (censored) fast.

You need to move your weight further back towards the back of the boat. While adding more rake to the mast will move the sails center of effort aft the end result is more helm pressure as it causes the boat to want to turn up into the wind. You would normally add rake in light air and take it out in heavier air. The idea being that in light air it gives you some helm pressure to steer against. Remember that while you are moving the sails center of effort, you are not moving the boat's center of lateral resistance. This is essentially the pivot point the the center of effort pushes against to either want to turn the boat up into the wind or turn the boat down away from the wind. What you want to find is the point where it is balanced.

I am going to disagree here. Adding rake in heavy air helps depower the boat and keep her from pitchpoling. You rake in heavy air and remove rake in light air.

Also the fastest my GPS has gone on the wave is 17mph. Heavy heavy air and beam reach - just a brief burst to 17mph before the bow dug in.

Agreed... more rake aft for heavier air to limit pitch pole. Same as a windsurfer... upright in lighter air and leaning further and further aft as the wind increases until the boom is nearly dragging for max speed. Move weight as far aft as possible at the same time.

By moving the mast aft to limit the chance of pitchpolling would you be giving up speed?

In light air yes. In heavy air, pitching and digging that bow in REALLY slows you down, so theoretically you do give up speed, but you gain a lot of control which is really more important in heavy air.

Ok thanks. so having a 10 hole adjuster just gives you a little more control in windier conditions. doug

[color=#0040FF]I am new to sailing other than going out with a friend of mine on his 16, (well once my brother and I went out we pitched it long story but thrilling) for years and figure it is time for my own. He balks when I talk about a wave, but with out his experience and knowing that I will be doing a lot of solo sailing, I feel a Wave is my best choice. After reading this series of posts (this amazingly informative posts) a lot of my doubts have been answered. I really want to thank everyone and also the Wave forum!

We brought along a GoPro HD cam with a housing to the Bitter End this year. I wore the (head) cam during some great sailing and will be editing some footage soon. This one segment says a lot about the speed of the Wave. Ripping!

Hobie Family Fun Week - Bitter End Yacht Club, Virgin Gorda, BVI November 2010

The winds were smokin the whole week we were there. They peaked at 25-30 knots Sunday and Monday. I did 10 races Sunday in this stuff. Yee haw!
