Nothing like planning at the last minute.
I'm going out tomorrow to give the north side of the Sydney Harbour a go. Going to launch from Rose Bay earlyish. Anybody at a loose end is welcome to tag along.

Matt, how big a tsunami is the AI rated for? :?

Quote:

Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology

MEDIA:
No use of the Standard Emergency Warning Signal (SEWS)
TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE AND FREQUENT BROADCAST
********************************************************************************
TSUNAMI WARNING NUMBER 10 FOR NEW SOUTH WALES
Issued by the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre (JATWC) at
6:41 AM EDT on Sunday 28 February 2010
********************************************************************************

TSUNAMI THREAT TO THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT

********************************************************************************
SUMMARY:
Tsunami warning for the marine environment for NEW SOUTH WALES.

Threatened areas extend over all New South Wales coastal areas from Gabo
Island to Point Danger.

Possibility of dangerous waves, strong ocean currents and foreshore flooding
throughout the day from 08:00 am (EDT) Sunday.

Sea level observations HAVE confirmed a tsunami has been generated.

For further details visit the Bureau web site www.bom.gov.au.

Next update due by 8:11 AM EDT on Sunday 28 February 2010
********************************************************************************
DETAILS:
Tsunami waves are more powerful than the same size beach waves, with the first
wave not always the largest. First tsunami effects are expected as follows:

Gabo Island after 08:00 am (EDT) Sunday
Sydney after 08:45 am (EDT) Sunday
Crowdy Head after 08:45 am (EDT) Sunday
Coffs Harbour after 09:00 am (EDT) Sunday
Byron Bay after 09:15 am (EDT) Sunday
Tweed Heads after 09:15 am (EST) Sunday

Check that your neighbours have received this advice.

Boats in harbours, estuaries or shallow coastal water should return to shore.
Secure your boat and move away from the waterfront. Vessels already at sea
should stay offshore in deep water until further advised.

Do not go to the coast to watch the tsunami, as there is the possibility of
dangerous, localised flooding of the immediate foreshore.

For emergency assistance, call NEW SOUTH WALES STATE EMERGENCY SERVICE on 132
500

Maps showing the affected areas are on the Bureau web site
www.bom.gov.au/tsunami. For a repeat of this warning call 1300 TSUNAMI (1300

My 24 yo son and I are travelling to Sydney area to sail AIs and ride bicycles. We can bring the bikes but not the boats. My friend Kayaking Bob has encouraged me to send out a posting and see if some folks may be around and able to help us connect up with some boats. In a triumph of unfortunate luck we managed to set our trip at a time when some of the most active AI user group folks in the area are out of town. The best we can offer is to be beacons of AI'dom in Oregon for others and when we are there from 3/20-28 donate toward costs plus hassle factors. We are pretty experienced here in Oregon and in Florida Bay area. So if anyone can give us some ideas we will follow up before we leave.

Ray survived Maui, sailing with me twice! :)

Actually, we had two very nice sails, broken up by humpback whales surfacing often near us. Let's see what you mates can do to top that. :)
(fancy camping deserts don't count!)

We've already alerted the local Great Whites about the impending arrival of some fresh imported meat products. Now, if we could only find some boats..........

They're scuttling a battleship off Avoca Beach, not far from Sydney, on 3/27, so we probably could top it if we could rustle up some boats for them (still no luck :( ).

Ray and I appreciate all your help Chris.

But how did you schedule the scuttling of a battleship while he was there?? :)

Mate, if we'd had more notice, we'd have arranged for an aircraft carrier.

You guys really picked your visit well :?
I've contacted one of the local dealers and hopefully will hear something tomorrow. Unfortunatly I've been pretty flat out the last few weeks and going to be tied up the weekend of 20-21 March as well. Are you staying around the sydney area?
