Dad and I pulled the our sc and all the gear out of the shop and started looking at how to put this mast up. I'd read the manual 4 times that morning and figured, "hey I'm a pro, No worries!"
after some knot tying and cursing we hauled away...about half way up the stepping pole started shifting in its socket. We didn't like the look of things so we let it back down and went to lunch.
Knowing what a fiasco it is to fix/replace a mast (1 of my 18's came in with a broken comp-tip)
we decided we wanted a better method. Something a little less spartan and a little more sure-fire. Thus was born the super trailer! We welded up a frame bought REAL trailer tires, moved them inside the frame on torsion axles, used the sail-tubes as guides, built up some roller fixtures and an a-frame to hold the mast in the rear and a winch post in th front. Currently it's assembled about 80%. Now all we do is roll the mast back on the A-frame, put the pin in, swing the A-frame forward, and push the button on the winch. Wholla! with the boat&mast its about 1600lbs+life jackets an outboard and the sails. She's a beast but it works like a dream. we're waiting for the weather to break (currently 33F) to paint and install the lights and toolboxes. You'll have to excuse my pictures, they are shaky And the shop's Super cluttered right now.

The Boat
I bought a 16 and rehabbed it as a summer project, then bought an 18 Boomer...long story short dad got the bug and we decided we were going to need a bigger boat.We began add hunting.1 phone call and a 1400mi drive later we had managed to drag home a 21sc.
The hull number is CCM0854G394 think it's a 94? There was a card in the cabin that said,
"Cruising Cats Winniconne, WI"
I haven't had the sails out to find the sail# yet.
With any luck I'll sell my 16 this spring and call up chip at Whirlwind the gennaker.
i'll have more pictures when it is done.

Last photo...First thing that came to mind was torpedo launching tubes off a PT boat...don't know why........

Would like to see a pic of the mast hoisting section. Nice looking trailer too.

I apologize for not replying sooner.
Here is my post on self-stepping my 21SC Mast.
Am looking forward to completion photos of your trailer!
franklin

http://violaphoto.com/hobie21-mast-stepping.htm

a. Replaced trailer's mast cradle with a 'tongue roller mount'

b. Angled roller mount forward to prevent winch strap being cut by post

c. Slide mast through cradle on aft crossbar and secure mast foot to dolphin-striker ball

d. Support mast with sturdy folding utility ladder (walked forward after securing foot to ball so mast is angled up and forward)

e. Secure trapeze wire(s) with line (approx 2 feet) to forward crossbar which keep mast from swinging from side-to-side

f. Attach winch strap to forestay and raise mast with winch

g. Secure stepped mast with 1/2" line to trailer, release winch strap and secure forestay to bow bridle

ps- trampolines not tight as I removed them before Hurricane Ike and filled hulls with water so wind would not fly her away

If you cannot view link or photos you may contact me direct
Thanks

Today was our first really good weather, and that means a shiny new coat of IMRON for the trailer. wiring tonight, then mounting of sail tubes, storage boxes, spare tire, and by this weekend.... the boat! :D (excuse the mess this is the first time we've had the doors up in 5 months!)

This trailer is positively insane! I don't think I've ever seen such a heavy-duty trailer. Don't think I've ever seen "inside wheels" like this either. Look forward to seeing the trailer with the H21 on it.

The tubing looks huge (and it is) but the wall thickness is 1/8" so, it isn't as heavy duty as is perceived. Today we put on sail tubes, winches, fenders, tie down ratchets, outer cable, mud flaps, lights, and some of the roller/rockers. Soon we'll have the tool boxes, jacks, and boat on.
The trailer is built for cross country hauls, Cincinnati isn't exactly beachfront!
The wheels are inside so you don't have to have your ass out in traffic when you get a flat.
If you look at the back bumper you'll see two hubs. in addition to the rolling jack there is also a standard trailer jack pined to the right side of the trailer.
get a flat
unpin the jack
pin the jack in the rear bumper hub
crank 'er up
crawl under boat
change the mag wheel
crank 'er down...you get the idea.
the whole point was with such a wide boat it was going to be tedious, if not downright dangerous to change a tire on the right side.

P.S. I'm looking for some "danger overhead wires etc" stickers for the winch pylon (because thats what you'll see when you'r stepping the mast.) Do I have to buy these stickers or do Hobie's lawyers have them giving 'em away?

I'm sure we can get some for you... Like on the front of the mast?

EL FIN!!

Image

Put the boat on and I'll be tightening th tramps after lunch.

Yesterday was a 16hr day of painting, wiring, placing, rigging, checking&mending sails, and sewing webbing for tie downs. now shes on. I have to sew a new tramp out of 42oz glass reinforced vinyl. I broke a Kisme connector dad had been saving (much to his displeasure!!!) so I put the standard set up back on. Rubbed down all the aluminum with Ballistol (keeps it black for a few months) and I'm calling the game.
finished

Winch post (the overhead bar is the wrong diameter I'm tacking a snatch block on the actual piece so I put that one up to illustrate...you get the idea) wireless electric winch and a manual one, should the battery fail. the V atop the pylon is for a second mast, we made provisions for hauling both the 21 and my 18 but the project lost steam and is now taking away from work time.

Underneath minus the two tool boxes.

Close up of the fold away taillights that double as rudder cradles

all the hardware (ratchets, hooks, snaps, nuts, bolts, cables etc.) is stainless. The planks are rubber epoxy so you don't slip. Tubing is sealed, powder coated-filled then sprayed with "IMRON" paint, Lights are all LED's, 3M safety walk rubber tape every where you step...
All&all 4 months of free time well spent!

It probably won't be until easter but I'll try to get a youtube video of the mast going up
