Hi all,

I'm on the hunt for a Hobie 16, and so far, all of the ones I've liked have been 1000+ miles away. Between the cost of gas and the need to take time off from work for so a long pickup, I'm wondering if anyone has used a third party to have a used Hobie delivered to them.

References or other feedback greatly appreciated!

Jay

PS: I'm in Cincinnati, and looking for a Hobie 16 (or possibly a 17 sport) less than 20 years in old.

I sold a Hobie and the buyer arranged a private third party to deliver it, but I don't remember where the buyer found the driver. The driver did this as a living and drove a Ford F350. Although I'm not much help, at least there's hope if you search.

Jay, i think my biggest concern would be if the boat wasnt in good shape, the third party wont know what he is looking at. I drove all the way to tennessee from cincinnati, the guy said the boat was great! the boat was junk, soft hulls and bent mast. I had to turn around and come home. Email me, [email protected], may be i could help you.

I think if you could find someone who knows Hobies and boats in general, have them go vet the boat out, even if you need to find someone else to do the delivery. Also ask them to do a video walkaround with a digital camera, and have them show you specific things like hull bottoms, rigging, lines etc.

I'm actually in the process of buying a Tiger from South Carolina and I'm in Boston! Granted, Tigers are harder to find than 16s but I looked at pictures and talked to the owner to get a feel for how he used the boat and how he treated it. That can give you a good indication of what shape it's in. Did they sail it often or let it sit for a few years, outside, uncovered? Did they race it recently? Raced boats are often pampered and maintained far better than a twice a year cruiser.

Good luck!

Blair

Thank you all of the suggestions and feedback! I'll follow up via email if this becomes an issue again - unfortunately the boat I really wanted already sold.
