How soft is soft??? There are no degrees of soft. If it's not hard, it's soft. If you push on it and it moves, it's soft. Soft spots anywhere on a boat hull is not good. Chech both hulls all over - top, sides; all over. Check the mast. It should be straight with no major dents or dings. Check the rudders, tramp, and sails. Check everything! You're new to this sport, so you want to buy a boat that's ready to sail; not a project that needs a lot of work. This Hobie 16 is 28 yrs. old. If it's been maintained well it could be as good as new and you can save a lot of money. If it needs some major work, walk away from it and look for another boat.
Hobie 16 vs. Hobie Wave????They're both good and they both have their shortcomings. Get the boat you really want. Don't settle for anything less. You don't want to buy a boat and trailer and regret your decision, and try to sell it a few weeks or months later. Do it right the first time.
Good luck! I hope this works out well for you.
Richard

A soft spot is separation of the fiberglass from the foam core and it forms a bubble like a blister on your skin. Rap your knuckles on the hulls and listen for solid "clunks". If you don't hear that clunk then press on that spot and if it gives it's a soft spot.

If you can find someone who knows about the boats to go with you then do it.
Consider buying a boat from a Hobie dealer, that way you'll have more faith in the quality of the boat.
Don't be in a hurry to buy the first boat you see; it's barely Spring and used boats are just coming on the market. By mid-April or May there will be many more.
