In May 2014, Lars Simonsen and his partner Suzi packed their kids Tiuri (7) and Liva (5) onto a pair of Hobie Mirage Tandem Islands and set off for Istanbul from Denmark. The trip took 18 months. Lars shares how he and Suzi kept their mobile kitchen stocked while on voyage.

As many concerned Mediterraneans asked us: ”But what do you do with food, for the kids? Are they not hungry?” Without waiting for an answer, they would offer us fresh fruit, freshly baked cakes, cooked pasta…

Of course, a crazy mum taking her kids across Europe in a kayak, didn’t mean not having food with us.

We would start explaining the set-up of our Hobie Mirage® Tandem Island. Pointing to the back of the yellow Tandem Island, we’d say: “This is our kitchen, where the back hatch holds our MSR-multi-burner and the pots and pans and other cutlery. We also have a waterproof backpack full of dried food, rice, pasta etc.”

The middle hatch held fresh fruit and chocolate, so we could easily reach them while sailing/pedaling. The front hatch – the biggest – is where we kept fresh food and a bigger frying pan.

After telling people that we also brought a tent, sleeping bags, mattresses etc…, the most common answer would be: ”And that all fits into those two kayaks?”
